Some weddings consist of the bride and groom and two witnesses. Others have an entourage of pageboys, bridesmaids, photographers, ushers, long lost relatives… you get the picture.

Most weddings fall somewhere in between these two extremes, but even smaller weddings can go out of control, as the bride and groom try to keep everyone in their respective families happy.

Does this sound familiar?

If it does, you’re not alone. Most people worry about upsetting others with their wedding arrangements, but the most important thing to remember is that it’s your day – no one else’s. In the long term it can be far better to put your foot down and make your feelings known (tactfully, of course), than to stay quiet and let other people take over, leading to arrangements you don’t like or want.

One friend who got married several years ago came up against her partner’s father who, being a deeply religious man, wanted them to get married in his church. They were set on having the wedding in a registry office, and my friend was anxious not to let her day spiral out of control.

It took some courage, but she and her partner decided to tell his father their wishes, and they stood by them together. It was, after all, their day and they wanted to get married in the way that would mean the most to them.

Compare this to the tale of another friend who got married just a few weeks ago. She didn’t have a good relationship with her sister, and so she chose her best friend to be her bridesmaid.

Unfortunately, her mother didn’t like this and demanded that her sister should be bridesmaid. Rightly or wrongly, my friend backed down… and on the day her bridesmaid was nowhere to be seen. Instead of looking after the bride, she spent her time propping up the bar.

Her mother’s wishes were understandable, but it wasn’t her wedding day. Neither was it her decision to make. And as a result, the bride would have been better off having no bridesmaid at all.

The moral of these stories is clear. If you want your wedding to be a day to remember – for all the right reasons – you and your partner need to sit down together and discuss what you both need and want. It is then vital to present a united front during the planning stages, to ensure you both get the day of your dreams.

More and more people nowadays are choosing the easier option of getting married in secret, with just two witnesses in attendance, and telling everyone afterwards. If you’re short on money and your wedding is becoming a logistical nightmare, you would be forgiven for thinking this is the easiest option. My partner and I did just this when we got married, and we dreaded telling everyone afterwards in case anyone was offended at not having been invited. Admittedly we surprised a few people, but without exception everyone was happy for us and delighted at the news.

But remember, however you choose to get married, it is just that – your choice, and no one else’s. You will never be able to please everyone, but in reality there are only two people you need to make sure are happy with the day – and that’s you and your partner.

Destination weddings, or weddings held in an area away from the couple’s home, are becoming increasingly popular. Many people enjoy the idea of their wedding taking place on a sandy beach, or in an old, romantic, European castle.

There are a few hot spots when it comes to a list of top destinations for couples. One is Mexico, and where many couples are heading south of the border for the delightful vibrancy of Mexican life and culture. With plenty of places to stay, warm weather, beautiful beaches and delightfully distinct food, Mexico remains one of the top travel destinations for those seeking a wedding abroad.

Another popular wedding site is the Australia and New Zealand area, which is included in Bride Magazine’s list of top travel destinations. Bride magazine specifically hails Sydney, Australia as being “sunny, fun, hip, friendly, [and] relaxed.”

Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Hawaii and Aruba are all also very popular places for weddings. Of course, the beautiful beaches, waterfalls, mountains, and Caribbean weather, music and charm make any of these sites a delight. The Dominican Republic, specifically, is extremely inexpensive. Couples also frequently enjoy many of the all-inclusive travel packages available in most of these areas.

Cruise weddings are yet another way to experience the beauty of these island areas. Weddings on cruise ships have become popular because of the many destinations each cruise reaches, allowing couples to visit multiple places rather than choosing just one for their honeymoon. There are currently many cruise ships that contain wedding chapels, and some cruises will even help the happy couple arrange a wedding at one of the port stops.

Finally, Europe is also a trendy and exciting place to hold a wedding. Couples love its history and charm. Europe may prove a little more difficult as a marriage site, because some European countries have very strict marriage regulations that may include an extended stay. For this reason, it might be easier to have a wedding at home and a celebration ceremony in Europe. Otherwise, when it comes to destination weddings, the sky is the limit!

If the wideness is caused by an ample bosom, it is advisable to avoid any pockets, lapels and detailed embroidery in the area. Basically, you want to avoid anything that is going to draw attention to the area. Choosing that contain interesting details are also a good move, as they force the eye downwards.

Hourglass shapes: An hourglass figure is one in which the top and bottom half of the body are perfectly balanced, with a very defined waist. It is seen as the perfect body shape, and women who have this figure are very lucky, as they are not at all restricted in the clothes that they can wear. As the two halves of the body are so finely balanced, you should avoid adding weight to either half, and simply accentuate your body shape. Pick a dress that clings to your waist, as this will show off your best asset.

Banana shapes: Women with banana body shapes tend to be slim with a waist that is not particularly defined, if at all defined. A strapless ball gown with a fitted bodice is a good idea for this body shape, as is a fitted dress with a high neckline. If you are on the tall side, your height can work as an advantage with these types of dress, especially if it features some delicate embroidery or beading as a finishing touch. Choosing a dress with a full skirt will create the illusion of curves.

Once you know which style of dress best suits your body shape, you are in a much better position to start the search for the perfect wedding dress. Finding a dress that suits your body shape is far more important than finding the most fashionable dress.

For a wedding, choosing the right wedding DJ is essential and could be the most important decision you make.

My recommendations
   1. Ask if the DJ uses professional grade equipment
   2. Make sure you have a written contract with the DJ that outlines all the details of the event
   3. For weddings be sure the DJ goes over the schedule of events with you and allows you to
       make changes as necessary
   4. Ask for references and how long the DJ has worked in the industry
   5. Ask if the DJ will program your music and take requests on the fly
   6. Ask about how the DJ will be dressed for your event
   7. Ask if the DJ does more than just play music (ie Announcements, etc)
   8. Ask how long it takes the DJ to setup

Hopefully this will help make any event a successful one.
